ACPE’s Cheer Squad En Route to the All Star Cheerleading Competition

by frank-stuart

Fourteen students from the Bachelor of Applied Dance, Bachelor of Dance Education and Bachelor of Health Science (Dance) are throwing themselves into ACPE’s extra-curricular activities through the ACPE Cheer Squad. The squad has been up and running for a year and has already claimed a gold and silver title at the 2015 Australian University Games. Currently they are training hard in preparation for the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation competition in October.

Cheerleading combines dance, stunt, tumbling, and tossing, demanding dedication and perseverance from the athletes. Squad members draw on their dance backgrounds to learn new acrobatic skills and techniques to add to their repertoire. As well as new tricks to introduce into their existing dance and fitness practices, members gain physical strength, agility, and fitness. Cheer squad also provides them with a safe place to stretch themselves and try out their new tricks and techniques.

Though the physical rewards of cheerleading are significant, the most prized result of participating in Cheer Squad are the friendships forged. Through shared blood, sweat and tears the squad members develop close bonds, lasting friendships and create their very own community of like-minded individuals at ACPE.

Recent ACPE Bachelor of Dance Education graduate Keira Bury is putting her degree to work as Cheer Squad’s mastermind and head coach. Bury’s days are exciting and varied as she switches between her work as a competitive cheerleading coach, dance teacher and choreographer for various troupes and clubs.

If you’d like join Cheer Squad register your interest with Student Services. All students are eligible to join Cheer Squad, however entry to the squad is contingent on a tryout to demonstrate skill level. Why not sign up to learn new skills, stretch yourself physically and mentally as well as meet peers outside of your classes and degrees.
