Sydney is truly one of the great cities of the world. It boasts famous surf beaches, a stunning harbour, icons such as the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, beautiful historic buildings, and top-class dining and shopping. And on top of that, it also has a climate that frequently allows you to spend time outdoors exploring, sailing or doing whatever else you fancy.

The trouble is there are so many great things to do in Sydney, that it can be hard to know where to start! The guide below should help you get started on exploring this magnificent city.

Getting around

For a freebie, try the free bus service that runs every ten minutes from Central Station to Circular Quay. For unlimited travel, go for a multi-pass, which lets you travel all day on trains, buses and ferries for $22 or $11 concession.

Dining and bars

If like most students you are on a tight budget, there are plenty of options for cheap eats, including the following:

  • The Norfolk Hotel in Cleveland Street Surry Hills does a $10 meal from 12pm-3pm during the week. Also look out for their $3 tacos on Tuesday evenings.
  • The Soda Factory does some great cheap meals, including ‘Dollar Dogs’ – $1 gourmet hot dogs on Tuesdays.
  • For a $10 pizza, try Bar100 at The Rocks.

For a coffee or lunch with some history and shopping, you can’t go past the Queen Victoria Building.

Outdoors, sightseeing and beaches

  • The Botanic Gardens has fountains and sculptures and a scenic mini-train, and you can walk through to the Opera House.
  • The Rocks area boasts beautiful historic buildings and cobbled laneways, as well as galleries, dining, theatre, and access to boat trips.
  • Try the Manly Scenic Walkway for harbour views and bush scenes.
  • For swimming, picnics, wildlife, and to explore a lighthouse, go to the Sydney Harbour National Park.
  • Darling Harbour is the place for everything from boat tours, shopping, and dining, to sightseeing, the aquarium, museums, and the IMAX cinemas.
  • For great views over the city, try the Harbour Bridge climb.

Entertainment

There is comedy at the Happy Endings Comedy Club in Kings Cross, live music at The Basement in Circular Quay, or visit one of the CBD’s cinemas for the latest flicks.

Cultural

Some options here include the NSW Art Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Carriageworks exhibitions, and the State Theatre.

Shopping and markets

As well as the Queen Victoria Building and The Rocks, there is great shopping to be done at Westfield in Pitt Street and The Strand Arcade in George Street. For bargains, you can’t go past the markets at Paddington and Glebe.

Summer events

  • The famous Sydney Festival runs for three weeks during January each year and has everything from circus and cabaret to theatre and dance. Don’t miss the freebies!
  • New Year’s Eve – if you’ve seen the Sydney fireworks on TV and you are itching to see the celebrations first hand, here is your chance. And don’t miss the aerial acrobatics and water displays as well.
  • For lots of colour and entertainment, don’t miss the Chinese New Year celebrations.

And more….

There are plenty more fun things to do in Sydney – including cycling, boating, scuba diving, visiting the zoo, or venturing out into the Blue Mountains. The sky really is the limit, so make sure to really make the most of your time in this magnificent city!
