Why practical skills matter

by frank-stuart

You know that age-old adage, “practice makes perfect”? Never was it truer than in your studies. Though having a theoretical knowledge of any course you study is important, practical education is more interactive and can help you learn and understand more. Incorporating practical skills into your studies is proven to help you better retain knowledge, get a better feel of the work you can do when you graduate and even gain employment! Here are the top three reasons why practical skills matter.

Improve learning

There are some things you can only learn through doing and experiencing. Theory provides the groundwork for knowledge about a topic, but the practical skills helps you understand the theory better. You can’t just learn by reading a concept, you actually have to see the concept in play to fully understand it. Real-life practical training gives a new learning experience and allows the knowledge to stay in your mind longer. For example, if you’re studying to become a dance educator or a personal trainer, practical training is required so that you yourself can perfect and demonstrate dance movements or training techniques.

Improves skills

Aside from improving learning, practical training in intended to improve skills that you can’t get just from theoretical knowledge. Practical training helps you acquire the specific techniques that will become relevant when you start working in your chosen field. Learning as much as you can about the theory of PE Teaching is great, but doing practical training actually helps you get a feel of what planning and teaching a real class is like. Learning about sports massage theory is necessary, but performing those sports massages on clients is much more relevant in a real-life setting. Practical training adds another dimension and complements the theoretical knowledge that you need to kick-start your career.

Learn about your career and options

As practical training gives you hands-on experience in the actual day-to-day work in your chosen field, it also prepares you for entering the workforce and learning about your career options. Students would also often be working part time, casually or doing work experience alongside their studies, giving them an opportunity to better understand the workplace, daily tasks required and the types of job roles available. It’s a great way to learn about what you like, what you want to do and what you can do, as well as learn more about other training and development opportunities available. Successful placements and practical training can even sometimes help you get jobs. Practical experience helps you get in contact with the right employers and create contacts and networks that can help you land your dream role.
